My first attempts at snorkelling were energetic, prompting Johnny to casually mention that he had seen many three-year-olds look more relaxed in the water. I did my best to ignore him and continued to cut a huge swath through the reef. It was one of the most picturesque scenes that I have ever laid my eyes on. I could not believe the sheer number of fish, or their splendid array of colours. Several of them came within inches of my facemask, puckering their tiny mouths as though whispering their secrets from another world. The coral reefs were a magnificent background to all of this activity.
